I have said before I love Google Reader and all things Google ,so it no surprise that I am always trying to learn more about Google Products. Google Analytics is no stranger to most people since it is a powerful way to track traffic statistic for your websites and blogs. One of the most frustrating things for me was to always wonder how much my own activity on my blog affected my statistics. I never knew it was as simple as adding a filter. What you basically need to do is create a filter within Goggle Analytics to remove yourself from the stats. Thanks to Ophir Cohen at his blog for describing a simple way to make this filter. I just applied this to my own site so I don’t have any results to give you but I was very happy to see Ophir explain it so simply for us.
From Google Analytic Filters Lesson 1
The first thing you need to do is find your own IP address. Try using http://www.WhatIsMyIP.com – and getting your IP address immediately.
The second step will be to exclude this IP from Google Analytics Reports. So let’s take this step by step:
1. Log-in to your Google Analytics Account
2. Select the profile you want to work on and click “edit”
3. Go to the third gray box named “Filters Applied to Profile”
4. Click “Add Filter” on the top right
5. Select “Add new Filter for Profile” with the radio button
6. Give the Google Analytics filter a name (example: “exclude my own visits”)
7. Select “Exclude traffic from an IP address”
8. Type in your IP address with a regular expression syntax, so you have to replace “.” with “\.”
So if your IP address is: 123.456.789.012 then you need to type in: 123\.456\.789\.012
You can also use match types and wild cards. Here’s a detailed explanation.
9. Click “finish” and you’re done!
This filter was really easy to do just following the steps as listed. Just remember this change only affects “new” stats. I am very anxious to see the results.
